Ryan Reynolds Teases DEADPOOL 4 Will Dig Into Some of the Comics’ Deepest Cuts
If the excitement surrounding Avengers: Doomsday wasn't already at an all-time high with the first trailer dropping today, Ryan Reynolds has just added even little more fuel to the MCU fire.
The actor has confirmed that another Deadpool movie is in the works, and it sounds like fans of the comics have something especially fun to look forward to.
While appearing on stage at Fanatics Fest (via @hobbynonsense on Instagram), Reynolds offered an encouraging update on the future of Marvel's Merc with a Mouth.
Although Deadpool 4 hasn't been officially announced by Marvel Studios, Reynolds made it sound like it's simply a matter of time.
He also revealed that the next movie won't just continue Wade Wilson's story. It's going to pull inspiration from parts of the comics that haven't been explored on screen yet.
Reynolds said: "There's a few really deep cuts that are missing from the movies, I think there's a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics.
“There's certainly some stuff that I love that Fabian [Nicieza] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan is a friend and an incredible comic book writer. There's stuff coming, there eventually will be another Deadpool film."
That's a pretty exciting tease for longtime comic readers. Mentioning legendary Deadpool writer Fabian Nicieza, who co-created the character, along with acclaimed writer Gerry Duggan, suggests Reynolds is looking beyond the most familiar storylines in search of material that even devoted fans may not expect. If that's the direction the next movie takes, it could end up delivering some wonderfully weird surprises.
Of course, the biggest question now is when audiences will actually get to see Deadpool 4. The first two films arrived just two years apart, but there was a six-year wait before Deadpool & Wolverine finally hit theaters. If history repeats itself, fans could be waiting until around 2030 before the next solo adventure arrives.
That doesn't mean Wade Wilson will stay off the screen until then. With Avengers: Doomsday bringing several former Fox-era X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Ian McKellen as Magneto, it's easy to imagine Deadpool finding a way into the chaos.
If he doesn't appear there, Avengers: Secret Wars seems like another perfect opportunity for the character to crash the party.
There's also one lingering mystery from Deadpool & Wolverine that fans still want answered. Why was Thor crying over Deadpool in that strange glimpse of the future?
Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth both know the answer, but neither has revealed what it means. Maybe that payoff is being saved for one of the upcoming Avengers movies, or perhaps it'll become part of Deadpool 4.
Then there's Wolverine. Hugh Jackman has already hinted that Logan's story might not be finished after saying he'll "never say never" about putting the claws back on for a twelfth time. If Deadpool 4 really is on the horizon, it's hard to imagine Jackman suiting up once again.
For now, Deadpool 4 remains unannounced, but Reynolds has made it clear that another movie is coming. If it really leans into overlooked comic book stories and characters, the next chapter could end up being one of the most entertaining and unpredictable entries in the franchise.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on December 18.
