Sam Esmail's METROPOLIS Series Will Use The Same Volume Filmmaking Tech That THE MANDALORIAN Uses

It was recently announced that the upcoming series adaptation of Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 sci-fi film Metropolis will shoot in Melbourne, Australia. The production will be one of the biggest ever in the Australian state of Victoria. It was also revealed that the series will be using the same Volume technology that is used by Lucasfilm to shoot The Mandalorian and the other live-action Star Wars shows.

The series comes from writer and director Sam Esmail, who previously worked on shows such as Mr. Robot and Homecoming. Like the original film, this series adaptation “will take place in a future society where wealthy industrialists rule the vast city from high-rise tower complexes, while a lower class of underground-dwelling workers toil constantly to operate the machines that provide its power. Risking everything they know, two star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the divide must find a way to bring down the whole system.”

The story is set in “a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master.”

The series is being produced through NBCUniversal and it recently landed a series order at Apple TV+. If you need a reminder of what the Volume technology is, here’s a featurette for The Mandalorian that offers some insight on the virtual production tech.

This filmmaking technology is going to be perfect for this type of series, especially with the sci-fi visual style of the series. If you’ve ever watched the original movie, you can see how those stunning visual designs will be heightened with the use of this modern tech.
