Sam Raimi Talks About SPIDER-MAN 3's Infamous Dance Scene "We Wanted It To Be Fun"
A lot of fans give Sam Raimi and Spider-Man 3 a hard time about Tobey Maguire’s infamous dance scene. The scene took place after he transformed into emo Peter Parker due to being corrupted by the black Venom suit. This was Parker as the bad boy, and it was pretty silly.
I remember when watching the movie in theaters with my friends and we were all laughing as this scene played out and that was the whole point of it! Raimi was going for funny. In a recent interview with Fandom, Raimi opened up about the scene, explaining:
"Well, we meant it to be funny, actually. It was Peter Parker's version – this lame kid – of what it must be like to be his evil self. But he's so whipped. He's so out of it that that's his take on it. And that didn't go over well with the audience. But that's what we were trying to do. So I'm not surprised that people… I'm glad people find it funny! We wanted it to be fun."
You know, I know a lot of people give Spider-Man 3 a hard time, and while it has its problems it’s really not that bad of a film, especially the first half of it. Raimi did the best he could with what the studio wanted him to do and it’s good!
It’s interesting to get some insight into this scene from the director after all these years. I totally understand what he was going for and I appreciate it for that.
