SANTA CLARITA DIET Canceled by Netflix and I Am Super Bummed
Guys, let me lament to you for a moment. Over roughly the last 30 years, there have been food items, popular drinks, TV shows, and restaurants that I have loved that have all gone out of business, stopped being made, been discontinued, been canceled, etc. I know that’s the same for everyone, but it has become sort of a joke to my husband and my best friend.
If I find a product I am emphatically excited about, they tell me I have doomed it, and it will inevitably be gone soon. I regret to report that it is no different for the show I have been raving about for the last three seasons, that made me laugh out loud more than any other show possibly ever, the wonderfully original Santa Clarita Diet.
The series was about Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant), a pair of real estate agents in sunny Santa Clarita, California, who decide to stick it out and forge a new normal when Sheila unexpectedly becomes undead. It was seriously and laughably the bloodiest show I’ve ever watched, and the laughs were over the top hilarious, served up by Barrymore and Olyphant at their absolute best. The supporting cast was also fantastic. Their daughter was played by Liv Hewson, kid next door by Skyler Gisondo, with Nathan Fillion, Joel McHale, Maggie Lawson, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Natalie Morales.
The actors in the show and the show’s creator, Victor Fresco, have made statements about their sadness about the show ending. The very best one came from Timothy Olyphant, via Cinemablend, who said:
“I loved working on this show. I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don’t want to film it, it’s up to them.”
How great is that?! Someone go film him! The writing was quick and light and just so funny. This show was a true gem that I will definitely rewatch over the years. I am incredibly bummed that it’s gone, and I’m pretty mad at Netflix for pulling the plug with a cliffhanger and so much more story to tell.
