Sarah Michelle Gellar and the Cast of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Celebrate the 22 Year Anniversary
This past weekend, on March 10th, marked 22 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired on The WB. 22 years! I can’t believe it’s been that long.
Buffy is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I’ve recently been watching it again with my daughters who have been loving it! It’s so funny to watch them react the ‘90s era of the show.
To celebrate and mark the occasion, Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, and Charisma Carpenter all chimed in on social media.

Clearly March is a huge month in my life. 22 years ago today, the show that changed my life, debuted on a little known network, the wb. To everyone that took a chance on me and this show, thank you. And to all the fans, that watched from the beginning and to those just discovering, thank you for keeping this show and this character relevant. I am eternally grateful to be your chosen one. (Even though I was originally chosen to be Cordelia lol)
In case you didn’t know, Gellar originally was up for the role of Cordelia, which ended up going to Carpenter, who originally was up for the role of Buffy. Gellar actually ended up approaching creator, Joss Whedon, about auditioning for Buffy instead, and well… we all know how that turned out.
In the end, the casting for everyone was perfect for the characters they played. Here’s what the other cast members of the show had to say:
Lots of fans of the series also chimed in saying:
Happy #BuffySlayDay!!! Congrats for 22 yrs of this shows visibility of strong women, LGBTQ+ characters, and consistent story lines of smashing the patriarchy. Today is a day to celebrate it with a @BuffyTVS marathon and listening to songs from @bufferingcast. pic.twitter.com/8ExfGOQ6dI— Taylor Kaiulani (@Simplytalkatay) March 10, 2019
It’s #BuffySlayDay and it’s not often I admit a TV changed my life, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t only fun, spooky, and cool, it also taught me its okay to be weird and unpopular (and that it’s even a good thing)!
