Sarah Michelle Gellar Says Fans Are The Key To Reviving BUFFY Reboot After Hulu Cancellation
The sting of losing a new Buffy series is still fresh for a lot of fans, and now Sarah Michelle Gellar is opening up about why she believes the story might not be over just yet.
After Hulu pulled the plug on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale reboot, fans have been loud, passionate, and honestly pretty relentless. And according to Gellar, that reaction could be the one thing that keeps hope alive.
A few months ago, Gellar confirmed the disappointing news that Hulu scrapped the long-awaited reboot from Chloé Zhao, which had already filmed its pilot episode back in August.
The project had generated serious excitement, especially with Gellar returning as both star and producer. But despite all that momentum, executives reportedly felt the show came off too “small” after seeing the first episode. There were other factors as well.
Still, Gellar doesn’t seem ready to close the book on New Sunnydale. While appearing on Andy Cohen’s radio show, she was asked whether the intense fan reaction could spark new conversations behind the scenes. Her answer kept things grounded but hopeful:
“I mean, I’m not there. I’m here, I don’t know. I will say that the fans are incredible. I mean they’re truly, like I said, they’re the reason why I wanted to do it in the first place. And you can’t not notice.”
For longtime Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, this cancellation was rough. The idea of revisiting that world with a fresh cast and creative direction had a lot of people excited.
Judging by the online reaction, people aren’t ready to let it go. There’s already talk about other platforms potentially stepping in, and even calls for the pilot episode to be released.
But don’t expect that anytime soon. Gellar made it clear she isn’t on board with the idea of the unfinished pilot leaking, explaining that “it wasn’t done.”
“I actually hope it doesn’t. Because then everyone’s going to have an opinion on this and that, and pilots are not finished. It wasn’t done, right? It’s not like we did a season and finished it and then they shelved it. It’s not like when they made ‘Batgirl’ the movie, right, and then didn’t show it.
“That stuff is really unfortunate and I ask fans, if you see scripts, if you see it leaked — don’t watch it. Because you’re not getting our vision and all of that.”
Gellar also revealed that one of the executives involved in the reboot wasn’t exactly a fan of the original series and would openly admit he had “never seen the entirety of the series.”
While she didn’t name names, reports suggest she may have been referring to Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, who oversees Hulu Originals.
That detail has sparked plenty of debate among fans, especially those who feel the show deserved leadership that truly understood its legacy.
Meanwhile, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was set to lead the new generation of slayers, shared glimpses of her character and was met with a wave of support. Fans flooded her posts with reactions ranging from heartbreak to outright frustration, with some even rallying for other streaming services to pick up the show.
So where does that leave things?
Right now, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale is off the table. But if there’s one takeaway from all of this, it’s that the fanbase still has serious power. Whether that translates into a revival somewhere else is anyone’s guess, but as Gellar pointed out, it’s impossible to ignore.
In the meantime, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is still available to stream on Hulu, and Gellar is staying busy with new projects, including Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which is now playing in theaters.
The Hellmouth might be closed for now, but if fans have anything to say about it, it probably won’t stay that way forever.
