Sarah Michelle Gellar Talks BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot - Do You Need to Watch the Original First?

Sarah Michelle Gellar is once again stepping into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and longtime fans are excited about what’s coming.

The cult classic series, created by Joss Whedon, ran for seven seasons filled with slaying, heartbreak, and some of the best teen drama TV has ever seen. Now, with a reboot on the horizon at Hulu, some people have have never watching the original series might be wondering, do I need to binge the original before diving into the new version?

According to Gellar, the answer is a firm no.In a recent interview with Variety, the actress said:

“No. Absolutely not. But this is a show that will cater definitely to the people. There will always be Easter eggs, because there was Easter eggs to the original. There will be Easter eggs in this one.

“But we also want to introduce it to a whole new, you know, people that maybe haven't seen the show. Who are you? And why haven't you watched it? But OK.”

It really is rare to come across someone who has never watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but those people are out there walking among us. Those are also the people that are probably not interested in even watching the revival.

For longtime fans, though, there’s plenty to get excited about. Gellar’s tease of Easter eggs suggests the reboot won’t forget where it came from. Expect subtle nods, callbacks, and references for those of us who know our way around the Hellmouth.

Right now, Hulu has only ordered a pilot for the reboot, with Chloé Zhao directing. A full season hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Gellar’s involvement have already reignited fan anticipation.

It’s worth remembering that Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s original run wasn’t a small commitment. Most seasons clocked in at 22 episodes, packed with lore, monsters, and great emotional arcs that shaped modern supernatural television.

For anyone who grew up watching Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Spike, there’s something nostalgic about returning to that world, especially if Gellar herself is there to guide us through it again.

Until then, if you want to revisit where it all started, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming in its entirety on Hulu. Whether you’re reliving the magic or watching for the first time, there’s no better time to return to Sunnydale.
