Scarlett Johansson Confirms BLACK WIDOW Will Tell the Story of What Happened in Budapest

Ever since Black Widow and Hawkeye brought up Budapest in The Avengers, fans have been wondering what that story entailed. In a conversation with Hawkeye, Black Widow compared the Battle of New York to what happened in Budapest.

The Black Widow movie takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, and fans have assumed that Budapest would be involved in some way. Well, Scarlett Johansson has confirmed in Marvel's Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book that the film will, in fact, tell us exactly what happened on that mission. Johansson said:

"We all agreed that we had to find out what happened in Budapest. That started out as this throwaway line which Joss Whedon threw into Marvel's The Avengers as a funny moment between Hawkeye and Black Widow. That’s Clint and Natasha talking about their history, and you get a fun little Easter egg for fans to theorize about. We thought that if we don’t go back to Budapest and find out what really happened there, people will feel unsatisfied. I wondered what did happen there?"

She went on to talk about her character and how Budapest fits into what she is going through:

"We often talked about what is going on in Natasha's head. I really think that Natasha is haunted by the fact that she has this past that she feels so guilty about. Unfinished business is that sense of guilt that follows her around, which all stems from what happened in Budapest. Black Widow is not about what happened in Budapest, but it's a huge jumping-off point for us to understand the heaviness of Natasha’s burden."

Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova, also opened up about the movie and revealed that the film’s storyline is horrifying:

"The storyline that we are telling is very horrifying. It's about women that have been, essentially, abused and trained up to be killing machines. As Scarlett said over and over, this is the right time for her to be telling [Black Widow's] story. And we're not shying away from the fact that this story is essentially about women getting their life back... And it's a Marvel Studios film, too. That's pretty rare, and it's very exciting to be a part of that.”

In the film, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) from a script by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle), Black Widow was set to be released on November 6th, but now it will be released on May 7th, 2021.
