Scarlett Johansson Explains That BLACK WIDOW is a Family Drama Story She Wasn't Expecting

While we wait for Disney to announce a new release date for Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson shared some new details regarding the story the film tells and the tone. She explains that the film tells a family drama story and confesses that this shift in the tone caught her off guard.

While speaking with Total Film (via Games Radar), Johansson said:

“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of. The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”

She went on to talk about what drove them to make the standalone Black Widow movie:

“I think from the very beginning when we first started talking about doing this standalone film, there was no reason to do it unless we could really dig deep and be brave and go there.”

I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen for the film so far. It looks like it’s going to tell an intriguing story filled with the badass action that we expect to see from Marvel movies.

Black Widow is set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. It sees the character travel back to Budapest while she is on the run from the U.S. Government, which is hunting her down because of her actions in Civil War. While in Budapest, she reunites with her “family” that consists of Red Guardian, played by David Harbour (Stranger Things); Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family); and Melina, played by Rachel Weisz (The Favorite), and they will “go back to where it all started” for a mission, which I assume is the place where the Black Widow program takes place.

What do you think about what Johansson had to say about the film?
