Scarlett Johansson Will Star in and Produce Disney's TOWER OF TERROR Movie
Scarlett Johansson is set to star in a produce Disney’s Tower of Terror movie! The movie is based on the popular Disney theme park attraction, you know, the one that they replaced with Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT!
I sure did love that Tower of Terror ride and it’s Twilight Zone theme. The ride was previously adapted into a 1997 TV movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst. But, Disney has been working on the new adaptation since 2015, when John August (Big Fish and Frankenweenie) was hired to write a treatment about five people in a posh hotel who take an elevator and disappear after it's hit by lightning.
The project is now being developed by Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out scribe Josh Cooley. He is writing the script right now, but there are no plot details to share regarding the story he’s looking to tell.
When it comes to the previous version of the film, August shared the following details:
“The central conceit was that the building's elevator moves through time. A 1920 band leader and a 2020 urban spelunker have to escape through many eras of LA history, stretching back to the Stone Age.
“It was a little Time Bandits, a little Groundhog Day, a little Back to the Future. I think it would have been fun. But it wasn't what Disney wanted. (And then the ride closed.)”
With Disney not on board with that concept, the current project being written by Cooley is sure to be different, we just don’t know what to expect. Maybe it’ll be more of a ghost story set in a haunted hotel, like the ride.
