SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT Creative Team "Heartbroken" Over Film Being Scrapped By WB as it Was Practically Finished
Yesterday, the big news dropped that Warner Bros. was scrapping the Batgirl film that was due for release later this year. Fans were shocked that the movie, which was due for an HBO Max release and a possible theatrical run, was just thrown out despite the $90 million used to create it. But it wasn’t the only casualty to hit the cutting room floor yesterday.
The animated sequel Scoob! Holiday Haunt was a follow-up to the 2020 movie Scoob!, which despite some negative reviews from older fans, did very well in its at-home release. My kids loved that movie! It just made sense to roll out another one, and this one was due to come out this holiday season. The film’s co-writer Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series) tweeted about the decision, saying:
"Why cancel a 95% finished holiday movie this close to Fall, when you're guaranteed kids watching it from right after Halloween until at least New Years? Makes no business sense esp. as both kids & parents dug the WIP screening."
Co-director Bill Haller said on Twitter that he "approved the last shot of animation last week & I can't wait for all the fans to see the amazing performances from this passion project which I know will make you very happy." Co-writer Tony Cervone, an animation veteran and Director of Animation on Space Jam, said the film was "practically finished and turned out beautifully," on Instagram, and added, "I am beyond heartbroken."
I am just really confused by the decisions being made over at WB! Even if these movies didn’t make a huge profit, they would have made something, and releasing them would have been a payoff for the people who put in major time and creative energy to create these movies. Now fans aren’t going to get very excited for the things Warner Bros. announces, because we can’t trust that we will even see them! I wonder what’s going to happen with The Flash. That seems like the movie they would have been making announcements about in the wake of the drama surrounding its star.
I hope they reconsider releasing these movies at least just on HBO Max, because I know they will make some of the fans very happy.
