Scott Derrickson Has a Sequel for THE BLACK PHONE Ready to Go If the First Movie Succeeds

I really hope that Scott Derrickson’s upcoming horror film The Black Phone is a success. I loved the movie, and it might just be the filmmaker’s best film to date. The movie currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so critics are loving it! The big question is… what will audiences think?

I think if people show up to watch the movie, they are going to be surprised by how good it is. It’s one of those films that I believe will live up to the hype that it’s currently getting.

If the movie is a success, Derrickson wants to make a sequel, and he’s already got an idea that he’s excited about. The story for the film is based on a short story written by Joe Hill, and Hill pitched the sequel idea to Derrickson. When talking about it, he told CB:

"Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phone that, if this movie does well, I'm gonna do it. He's got a great idea, I really liked it. Joe's very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea and I was like, 'That's how you do a sequel to Black Phone. That's terrific.'"

Obviously, he’s not going to spill any details on the idea, but after watching the first film, I’m totally up for a sequel!

In the first film, "Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer's previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney."

The movie stars Ethan Hawke as the Grabber, and he’s joined by Mason Thames in his first-ever film role and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen. The movie set to hit theaters on June 24th, 2022.
