Scott Eastwood Says His Dad Clint Eastwood Put Kevin Costner In His Place While Making the 1993 Drama A PERFECT WORLD
Clint Eastwood is known for being a no-nonsense actor and director, and it comes as no surprise that he doesn’t play games or tolerate unprofessional behavior on his film sets.
His son, actor Scott Eastwood, backed up what we already knew with a story during his recent interview on the podcast Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. He shared a memory from the set of his father’s 1993 drama A Perfect World, which Clint Eastwood directed and starred in opposite Kevin Costner.
In the film, Costner played a convict on the run with a child, and Eastwood played a Texas Ranger on his trail. But the story was not the only place they couldn’t see eye to eye. Costner was the type of actor who preferred to spend time honing performances, while his co-star/director famously disliked rehearsals and extra takes.
Scott Eastwood remembered a specific incident on set, stating: “Kevin Costner, sort of going through maybe, you know, the Kevin Costner rise to fame and maybe got a big ego, blah blah blah. But they were doing Perfect World ... and apparently Kevin wouldn't come out of his trailer for some reason.
“And my dad doesn't do trailers and things. He's like, 'Just be on set, stay on [set].' He always told me too as a kid, 'You want to learn how to make movies? You want to learn how to do this, you stay here with everybody else and you make the damn movies.'“
I’m sure it’s difficult to work with some many different personalities across an array of projects. Actors and filmmakers all have their own processes, and working together can’t always be easy. Eastwood continued:
“So [Clint] just said, 'We'll send him home then,' and everyone said, 'What do you mean? He's in the scene.' He said, 'Eh, send him home. 'So he sent him home, and I guess they just went to Kevin and said, 'Hey, you're going to go home for the day. You don't need to be here.'
“He said, 'What do you mean? I'm in the scene.' And they went, 'Well, I guess you're not anymore. Clint changed that.’ So you know that's the pecking order. And so I think the next day [Costner] was on set, ready to go.”
While an actor may need time or some sort of method to go through, they have to be cognizant of the people around them and the job they’ve been hired to do. It sounds like Clint Eastwood ran a tight ship on his film sets, but he made some great movies, and A Perfect World was one example of that.
