Screen Gems Producing a New Horror Film THE POPE'S EXORCIST Based on The Exploits of Father Gabriele Amorth
Screen Gems is producing a new horror film titled The Pope’s Exorcist, the story of which is based on the exploits of Father Gabriele Amorth. He is a legendary Italian priest who was the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican and he performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Church.
Ángel Gómez (Voices) has been set to direct the film from a script written by Chester Hastings and R. Dean McCreary. The film’s story will be made using two international bestselling memoirs, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories.
Father Amorth passed away in 2016 and he left behind a collection of detailed accounts of his experiences performing exorcisms on people all over the world. Amorth previously explained that “relatively few of the exorcisms he performed qualified as true demonic possession, but he said his favorite film was the William Friedkin-directed The Exorcist.” Friedkin ended up turning the priest’s life work into the 2017 documentary The Devil and Father Amorth.
That was a good documentary and it’ll be interesting to see some of Father Gabriele Amorth’s stories brought to life for this new movie.
