BOY FALLS FROM SKY Script is Based on the Disastrous Broadway Musical SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK

Back in 2010, a Broadway musical titled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark hit the stage, after facing one roadblock after another. The musical was highly anticipated, and had a lot of buzz surrounding it, as Broadway’s The Lion King director Julie Taymor was on board to helm the ship, and Bono and The Edge of U2 signed on to provide lyrics.

But from the beginning, it faced a troublesome development process, including numerous delays, technical difficulties, and safety concerns during rehearsals and performances. It became notorious for the high number of injuries sustained by cast members, leading to several cast changes and, eventually, mixed reviews.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was also confusing to fans of the property, as the story took liberties with the characters that felt unfamiliar and unnatural. The musical went on to do a relatively lengthy run on Broadway, despite its issues, but it ultimately closed after four years with a massive financial loss.

Now, a new script has hit the Hollywood Black List, which includes the best unproduced screenplays in the film industry. It’s titled Boy Falls From Sky, and it follows the story of how Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark made it from page to stage. It’s written by Hunter Toro, who previously penned Digman! and Bupkis. The synopsis of the screenplay reads: "An anxious playwright finds himself tangled in a web of deceit, injury, and intellectual property as he adapts his first Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Inspired by a true story."

It sounds like an interesting story, especially considering how many difficulties this production faced. I’m sure we only heard the half of it. Keep an eye out for more info from the project, and we will let you know as it develops.
