Sean Astin Believes a GOONIES Sequel Will Still Happen and Pitches it as an Animated Series

There's been talk of a sequel to The Goonies for years. All of the talent involved with the original film including director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg have said that it's going to eventually happen. Donner said he was also 1000% certain it was going to happen and Spielberg has even written a story for it.

I'm one of those fans that would absolutely love to see this sequel happen. It would be amazing to watch these characters come together on the big screen again after all these years. But will it ever happen!? Sean Astin, who recently played Bob in Stranger Things Season 2 says that it will likely happen. During an interview with The Huffington Post he said:

“It’s always possible. I will say that it’s likely that it will happen. I don’t know when, but I have always had confidence that that sequel will happen mostly because Steven Spielberg, from the time when I was a kid, told me he wanted it to happen and has never changed his opinion.”

The actor goes on to say that "they just haven't figured it out." He then makes a little pitch on how he would like to see it come back as an animated series, saying:

“What I would love to see is a ‘Goonies’ animated series, and I would love to play Mikey. I do a lot of voiceover characters, and I play younger characters with my voice, and that would be meta.”

It'd be fun to see a Goonie animated series, but I'd like to see a live-action sequel more. I actually have a pretty good idea for another Goonies movie, but that's a conversation for another day.

Are you still up for seeing a Goonies sequel? Now is the perfect time to do it because Hollywood is in this nostalgic radcore movement right now. People are loving the resurgence of 80s pop culture!
