Sean Astin Shares His Thoughts on The New LORD OF THE RINGS Series
This past weekend we learned that Warner Bros. and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are looking to produce a Lord of the Rings TV series with Amazon Studios. After what Peter Jackson did with this iconic story, I never thought anyone would attempt to do it again. I guess I was wrong!
Sean Astin, who played Sam in the film trilogy, recently shared his opinion on the upcoming Lord of the Rings series with EW, saying:
"I saw that the other day, and I thought that was intriguing. I've been saying for 15 years that maybe like 12 years after Lord of the Rings came out, that it would get remade. And people always said, 'Oh no, it'll never get remade! It's a classic! They could never top it!' And I'm like, 'No, it'll get remade. It's a massive story! The characters are so beloved.'"
He was right! Still, it's going to be really weird seeing a whole new team of people come in to retell this story again with these legendary characters. As of right now, Astin is not involved and he has no idea what the plans of the series are. But, when asked what he'd like to see the series focus on, he mentioned the Mines Of Moria, which would be pretty awesome. I doubt they will exclude the rest of the major characters, though.
At one point, the actor was also asked if he would be up for returning to reprise his role as Sam, and this was his response:
"I'm carrying the Samwise banner for the Peter Jackson version of Lord of the Rings. When I saw the Amazon thing, that didn't even occur to me. I just sort of thought, 'What would it be like to see the next Sam there?' I think it's an intriguing idea [but] the devil's in the details. How would they do it? How? Who?"
It will certainly be interesting to see what actors end up being cast in this series and who will be brought in to develop it. I wish we had more details right now on what is being planned, but all we can really do at this point is speculate and talk about what we'd like to see from the series.
