Sebastian Stan Opens Up About How Bucky Barnes Feels About Captain America Not Giving Him The Shield in Endgame
Everyone had their feelings and opinions about the end scene in Avengers: Endgame where we got to see Captain America come to meet up with the guys who sent him into the past, only not the way he was supposed to. When he returned as an old man who had lived out his years with the woman he loved, he had his shield in hand to pass down to a friend. Many people thought the shield may go to Bucky, but the shield was instead given to Sam Wilson, aka Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie).
While some fans were confused by the choice, Sebastian Stan, who played Bucky in the films, had a different perspective. During a panel at the recent MCM Convention in London, Stan was asked about whether Bucky should have been the one bestowed the shield, and he said:
“I think it makes a lot of sense.”
“It is very different from the comic book. I really love the enthusiasm that so many people felt with people wanting Bucky to get the shield, but it just isn’t best for him to get the shield if you think about it.”
Stan then went on to say that Steve’s decision to pass the shield to Sam set himself free as well as Bucky. Steve Rogers had gotten to live a life aside from the responsibilities of Captain America, and he was giving that same freedom to Bucky.
“In a way, for me, Steve not giving him the shield was a way of setting him free and setting himself free. These guys have been forever in a way tied to this duty since the ‘50s and carrying on this mantle. In a way, they are both sort of free in an extent now, and Sam is a much trustworthier character.”
I like that perspective. I was a little surprised when I saw the movie, but that just makes complete sense. How did you like that aspect of the movie? Did this change your point of view on it?
