Sebastian Stan Says He Was Surviving on HOT TUB TIME MACHINE Royalties Before Landing Job at Marvel
Long before he was an Oscar-nominee, and even before he was the MCU’s James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes aka the Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan was a struggling actor who was getting a lot of jobs, but was still looking for his big break. Just before getting in with Marvel, one came in the form of the 2010 time-travel comedy, Hot Tub Time Machine. It wasn’t the role of a lifetime or anything, but it did help him out in a pivotal point in his career.
The actor explained to Vanity Fair, “I was actually struggling with work. I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from Hot Tub Time Machine.”
In director Steve Pink’s sci-fi romp Hot Tub Time Machine, Stan played the typical ’80s bully Blaine, who terrorizes a group of friends (John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke) who travel back in time to their teen years at a 1986 ski resort.
Stan went on the next year to appear in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and has continually reprised his role in the Marvel movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and Captain America: Brave New World (2025).
Stan can next be seen as the Winter Soldier in Thunderbolts*, premiering May 2nd in theaters.
