See How Weta Created The Practical Robot Costume For Netflix's Sci-Fi Film I AM MOTHER

Weta Workshop has released a very cool featurette that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what went into creating the practical robot costume that was used in the Netflix sci-fi film I Am Mother. Yes, in case you didn’t already know, the robot that we saw in this film was not CGI. It was a practical costume, and it was incredibly well made. It’s so cool to see how real they were able to make this robot look.

If you haven’t watched the movie yet, you should check it out. It’s actually really good! It stars Hilary Swank and the story centers on a robot (Rose Byrne) designed to repopulate the earth and she raises a human child (Clara Rugaard). The bond between mother and daughter is tested and threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news. As you’ll see, things will take a dark and sinister turn.

I Am Mother was directed by Grant Sputore from a script by Michael Lloyd Green and this is the synopsis:

A sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl (Rugaard), who is the first of a new generation of humans to be raised by Mother (Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. But the pair’s unique relationship is threatened when an injured stranger (Swank) arrives with news that calls into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world and her Mother’s intentions.

The movie is currently streaming on Netflix.

I Am Mother, the acclaimed new sci-fi film, is streaming on Netflix now. Rather than a prop, dummy, or fully CGI character, Mother is a complex specialty robot suit, worn by a real human performer. Featuring more than 300 components, LED lights, animatronics, 3D printing, and model-made elements, the suit takes 45-60 minutes to be bolted onto the actor.
