SEGA Is Releasing the SEGA Genesis Mini Later This Year

Here’s something that was both inevitable and a surprise. Sega took some time at Sega Fest 2019 to announce that they will be releasing the Sega Genesis Mini/Mega Drive Mini (depending on your region) this year.

This is in the same vein as the NES Classic and SNES Classic from Nintendo and PlayStation Classic from Sony where they create an emulator in a case shaped like the original console and load it with a number of games that fans love. It’s a big hit for collectors and nostalgic folks.

Well, the games will differ depending on what region you live in, but Sega says that there will be 40 games for each region. In Japan, the Mega Drive Mini will include the following:

  • Castlevania Bloodlines

  • Comix Zone

  • Gunstar Heroes

  • Madou Monogatari

  • Powerball

  • Puyo Puyo 2

  • Rent-a-Hero

  • Shining Force

  • Sonic 2

  • Space Harrier II

Meanwhile, the Sega Genesis Mini in the United States will include:

  • Altered Beast

  • Castlevania: Bloodlines

  • Comix Zone

  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

  • Ecco the Dolphin

  • Gunstar Heroes

  • Shining Force

  • Sonic The Hedgehog

  • Space Harrier II

  • ToeJam & Earl

These aren’t terrible starts honestly. Comix Zone is a blast and I love Shining Force. The Mega Drive will come with the classic six-button controllers, and the Genesis will have three-button controllers. The controllers will connect via USB, and the Genesis will ship with two controllers for a price of $79.99.

Are you excited for the release of the Genesis Mini? What games do you hope make it? Do you think US fans will be able to get six-button controllers?

You can already pre-order the Genesis mini on Amazon and Wal-Mart with the consoles releasing on September 19.
