SEGA's '90s Video Game TOEJAM & EARL Is Getting a Movie Adaptation at Amazon
ToeJam & Earl! Now, there’s a classic 1991 Sega video game that I haven’t thought about in years! I used to play that game all the time, and I completely forgot about it until I came across the news that it’s actually being adapted into a film!
ToeJam & Earl was created by Mark Voorsanger and Greg Johnson, and the story centers on “two space-alien rappers who come to Earth seeking a cure for the disease eradicating their home planet’s rhythm, funk and groove.” The synopsis for the project goes on to say:
“Earth, their legends tell them, is the Paradise where the music that created their culture originated. Unfortunately for our heroes, not only do they wreck their ship, but they find that Earth is . . . well, not the haven they expected. But the music – that part was true. So begins their quest to find as much of that music as they can in the hope of saving their planet, and maybe ours as well.”
The project is in the works at Amazon Studios. It’s being written by Hotel Transylvania 4 writers Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazzo, and it comes from producers Dmitri M. Johnson, Dan Jevons, and Mike Goldberg's Story Kitchen.
I remember digging the soundtrack for the game which consisted of jazz, funk and hip-hop. There were also two sequels ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron and ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth.
I’m actually looking forward to seeing how this project comes together! I assume it will be animated, but that wasn’t specified in the report. Did you ever play ToeJam & Earl, and are you excited that we are going to be getting a film adaptation!?
