SEINFELD Star Jason Alexander Talks About Auditioning For The Role of George Costanza
Seinfeld is easily one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. It’s one of those shows that I never get tired of watching and to this day, no matter how many times I’ve watched it, I still bust up laughing.
For those of you other fans out there who have ever wondered about the process that Jason Alexander went through to land the role of George Costanza in the series, he recently talked about it on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You. It’s actually interesting to hear how he landed the role, which he never thought he’d get.
Alexander explained that he made a tape of himself wearing a pair of glasses and putting on his best New York accent, which was essentially an imitation of Woody Allen. He said:
I not only did a thick New York accent, I literally was doing Woody Allen, like you know, the gestures and that voice. …and a couple days later got a call I think from Larry [David]. He said I love everything you’re doing. You know come out, we want to have you meet Jerry. You’ll read for the network and I flew out and they said don’t change a thing except don’t do the Woody Allen voice.”
Listen to Alexander talk about it below. Alexander was freakin’ brilliant in the role of George and it’s hard to imagine anyone else in it. But, there were some pretty big actors that he beat out including Chris Rock, Danny DeVito, Larry Miller, and Paul Shaffer.
