SENSE AND SENSIBLITY Trailer Brings Jane Austen’s Classic Romance to Life With Daisy Edgar-Jones

Fans of Jane Austen have a new period drama to look forward to. Focus Features has released the first trailer for Sense and Sensibility, offering a gorgeous first look at a fresh adaptation of Austen’s beloved novel, with Daisy Edgar-Jones leading the cast as Elinor Dashwood.

Following her breakout performances in Normal People and Twisters, Edgar-Jones steps into one of Austen’s most iconic roles as the thoughtful and reserved Elinor. The story follows the Dashwood sisters after tragedy forces them to leave their family estate alongside their widowed mother and begin a new life in a modest cottage. As they adjust to their new reality, they each find themselves navigating romance, heartbreak, and the complicated expectations of society.

The trailer leans into everything fans love about classic Austen adaptations. There are beautiful countryside vistas, elegant period costumes, emotionally charged moments, and plenty of lingering looks that hint at the complicated relationships waiting to unfold.

It appears director Georgia Oakley has delivered a faithful interpretation of Austen’s first published novel while embracing the timeless romance that has kept readers coming back for generations.

Joining Edgar-Jones is an ensemble cast that includes Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Caitríona Balfe as Mrs. Dashwood, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Margaret Dashwood, George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, and Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings.

Oakley previously earned widespread acclaim with her feature directorial debut, Blue Jean, which received nominations for both the BAFTA Film Awards and the British Independent Film Awards.

This new adaptation is produced by Working Title Films, the studio responsible for beloved romantic favorites including Love Actually and Bridget Jones's Diary. The company also has experience bringing Austen's work to the screen, having produced 2005's Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and 2020's Emma led by Anya Taylor-Joy.

Of course, Sense and Sensibility has a rich cinematic legacy. The most celebrated adaptation arrived in 1995 with director Ang Lee's Oscar-winning film starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. Thompson also adapted the screenplay, earning her second Academy Award for her work.

This latest version will introduce Austen's classic story to a new generation while giving longtime fans another beautifully crafted take on one of literature's greatest romances.

Focus Features will release Sense and Sensibility in theaters on October 16.
