Seth MacFarlane Says THE ORVILLE Season 4 Is Fully Written and Ready to Go
It’s been four years since The Orville: New Horizons aired its final episode on Hulu, and fans are still holding out hope that the USS Orville hasn’t completed its final voyage. Now, Seth MacFarlane has offered the most promising update yet, as he actually finished writing the next season.
When The Orville first premiered in 2017, plenty of people assumed it would be a straight-up Star Trek parody. It didn’t take long for that assumption to fade. Yes, the DNA of classic sci-fi was there, but the show quickly evolved into something that stood on its own.
The series followed Captain Ed Mercer and his crew as they explored strange new worlds, navigated interstellar politics, and faced off against everything from ruthless alien species to rogue artificial intelligence.
What made it work so well was its tone. The show could swing from genuinely emotional character drama to absurd, laugh-out-loud humor without missing a beat.
It delivered cinematic visual effects, a sweeping orchestral score, and thoughtful world-building that dug deep into its alien races and human relationships. By the time Season 3 landed on Hulu as The Orville: New Horizons, it felt like a fully realized sci-fi epic.
Since then, things have been quiet. But maybe not permanently quiet.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MacFarlane dropped a pretty major reveal about the future of the series.
“I will be honest with you: season four is written,” MacFarlane said, noting there are 10 finished scripts. “It’s just a question of when we have the time to produce it.”
The only obstacle appears to be scheduling. MacFarlane has a packed slate of projects, and getting a show of The Orville’s scale into production isn’t exactly a small undertaking.
He went on to say, “I’m the problem. It’s [a matter of] when I can make that my year, with all the other stuff we have in the works. But we can hit the ground running when it happens.”
So, The scripts are finished. The creative engine is ready. It’s simply a matter of time and logistics. Hopefully, MacFarlane clears the runway so the Orville crew could be back in action for another space adventure.
Until then, at least we know Season 4 exists, it’s written, and it’s waiting.
