Seth Rogen Calls Negative Movie Reviews "Devastating" and Knows People Who Have Never Recovered From Them
Seth Rogen has had a pretty cool career as an actor, and it includes a variety of different film projects and characters that he’s played over the years. Some of the films he’s made have been great and praised, while others have been not-so-good. It’s the nature of the business! Sometimes the movies that are made are good, and sometimes they are bad.
During a recent interview on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Rogen opened up about bad reviews that are written by critics and how hurtful they are to people. He calls them “devastating” and says he knows people who have never recovered from them. He explained:
“I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things. It’s devastating. I know people who never recover from it honestly, years, decades of being hurt. It’s very personal… It is devastating when you are being institutionally told that your personal expression was bad. That’s something that people carry with them, literally, their entire lives and I get why. It f****ing sucks.”
Rogen went on to talk about his own 2011 movie The Green Hornet, which wasn’t met with much praise from critics, but says that the good box office results for the film helped him through that:
“For Green Hornet, the reviews were coming out and it was pretty bad. People just kind of hated it. It seemed like a thing people were taking joy in disliking a lot. But it opened to like $35 million, which was the biggest opening weekend I’d ever been associated with at that point. It did pretty well. That’s what’s nice sometimes. You can grasp for some sense of success at times.”
He then went on to say he was most upset about the movie The Interview because it felt like a “personal rejection” to him being a producer and director of the comedy.
I get what he’s saying, but he’s also a millionaire. It’d gladly take some hurt feelings in exchange for financial security. Regardless, I try to stay upbeat and positive about the reviews that I write. I get a lot of crap from people about liking everything, but I just enjoy watching movies! Even if I don’t like certain movies I try to find some things that I like in them. But, there have been times when a movie is so bad, it’s hard to see anything good. It just happens!
In the end, reviews from critics shouldn’t even matter, it’s all up to the audience! Seriously, who cares what a critic says!? What do you all think about Rogen’s thoughts on bad reviews?
