SEVERANCE Creator Dan Erickson Says Reading Online Fan Theories Can Be So Overwhelming
The Apple TV+ psychological thriller Severance has already given fans so much to think about, with season one posing questions about the company Lumon, its origins, its creator, the building’s strange corridors that include lambs, violent artwork, and mysterious masked people.
We want to know about the unsevered employees and their intentions, and we have to know what will happen to Mark and his co-workers after that doozy of a season finale.
All is about to be answered, and more questions will arise, no doubt, but some fans are out there theorizing their own endings, and the show’s creator finds that intriguing.
During a recent interview with SFX magazine, Dan Erickson explained: "Ben and I did a lot of work before the show ever came out, before we even got into production on season 1, [when it comes to] figuring out a lot of the answers.
“So there's a lot more that we know, that we've known from the beginning, that we've not revealed on screen – and some of it we may never reveal on screen. People can continue to have their own ideas about it and that's part of what makes [Severance] special.
“I feel like I can read the theories and enjoy them and get excited by the creativity people are bringing to them. Sometimes, though, I have to stop.
“Sometimes it does get overwhelming to see them all and be like, 'Oh, I wish we could [go in] all these different directions', but they are so fun to read.”
I’m sure it would be tricky to go down each of the rabbit holes, knowing you have a different plan mapped out. But from what I’ve seen so far, I trust Erickson to tell us a fantastic story, whether we see it coming or not.
In the 10-episode Season 2, Mark (Adam Scott) and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a rabbit hole.
In addition to Scott, the series stars Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, Patricia Arquette and new series regular Sarah Bock.
Severance returns to Apple TV+ this Friday, January 17th.
