Shane Black (Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys, The Predator) has got a new project that he's been digging into. According to his writing partner Fred Dekker, he and Black are working on a TV reboot of the classic 1960s British spy series The Avengers for Warner Bros. Even though Black has already worked with one of the Avengers in Iron Man 3, this is very different than what he did with Marvel.
“It’s The Avengers, with John Steed and Emma Peel. We’re setting it in Britain in the 60’s, and our approach is The Ipcress File meets Doctor Who. At this moment, it’s my favorite thing we’re working on.”
That's awesome! The Avengers series ushered in a wave of other spy series at the time that included Mission: Impossible, Get Smart, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and more. It was adapted into a feature film in 1998 that starred Ralph Fiennes as Steed, Uma Thurman as Emma Peel, and Sean Connery as the villain. That movie wasn't very good, but I miss Sean Connery.
I've always enjoyed Shane Black and Fred Dekker's work, which started with Monster Squad, and I think they could do something really cool, fun, and fresh with this series reboot of The Avengers. I have no idea if anything will come of this project, but I'm definitely interested in seeing what they would do with it!
