I loved what I saw in the first trailer for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. I was actually surprised by how so many fans thought it was lackluster. But I’m a huge fan of martial arts films, and I’m a fan of Shang-Chi, and what I saw in that trailer looked freakin’ rad!

Well, Jonathan Schwartz, Marvel Studios VP of Production and Development and a co-producer on Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, hyped up the film even more during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said:

"I think this is the best action [Marvel has] ever done. Every punch is meaningful, every fighting style is meaningful, and the story is told visually in such a great way."

That’s a bold statement, and it’s one that I hope ends up being true. I would love nothing more than for this movie to be the best action film Marvel has made. Schwartz went on to talk about the story saying:

"The core of Shang-Chi's arc in the comics is really a family drama. That was something that Destin keyed into really early on in our conversations, the idea of taking this broken family and this really dark, even abusive family background and seeing what that does to a child over time."

Screenwriter Dave Callaham (Mortal Kombat, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2) went on to talk about adapting the character for today’s audiences, saying:

"When you look at the character of Shang-Chi through the comic books going back to the '70s and '80s, the fact that he existed and the fact that he was an Asian character was amazing. But at the same time, there are aspects of that portrayal of him that maybe could feel a little stereotypical. So when we first started to map out who this character was and what his journey was going to be over the course of this film, we were all very sensitive to not have it go into stereotypical territory."

The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, The Glass Castle) from a script written by Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2). It stars Sam Liu, who seems great in the role. He’s joined by Awkwafina as Katy and Tony Leung as Wenwu. Michelle Yeoh is also in the film.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently set for release on September 3rd. I can’t wait to see it!
