Sharlto Copley Offers Update on DISTRICT 9 Sequel, Which Might Start Shooting in About a Year
Director Neill Blomkamp has been developing a sequel to his hit sci-fi film District 9 for years, and it sounds like he’s getting very close to to actually getting the film, District 10, into production. Our latest update on the project comes from the original film’s star Sharlto Copley, who shared in an interview with BroBible:
"Yeah, man, we've been working. I did a draft, I sent it back to him. He's done a draft. It's like just tiring to find the right story. There were some things going on socio-politically that [Blomkamp] felt maybe timing-wise he didn't want to go immediately. So maybe in like a year, year-and-a-half [we'll begin filming]. He wants to have something to say."
So, they might actually start shooting this thing in the next year or so. It’s been so long since the first film was released, but there’s been an ongoing appetite from fans to see this story continue. Blomkamp previously said that he’s ”still working on it,” and the movie will happen “within the near future." Looks like that near future is coming up!
As for what we can expect from the film, the filmmaker previously shared that it will be a stripped-down and barebones movie:
“I think the approach of the first film is correct; it’s just really a question of the script. If there’s slightly more stuff happening in the script, then you need slightly more money. But I think it would still be as stripped-down and bare bones as we could make it. That becomes more nimble and more creative, and personally, I like that.”
Blomkamp also teased the story, and said that it takes cues from "a topic in American history.” He said:
"That script continues to be written. It's looking good. It took a decade to figure out, to come up with a reason why to make that film as opposed to just make a sequel.
"There was a topic in American history that the second I realized that that fit into the world of District 9, it felt like an awesome way to do a sequel. So yeah, it continues to be developed and it's getting a lot closer."
There aren’t really any other details to share, but I’m excited to see what Blomkamp and Copley are planning for the film!
