Shawn Ashmore Faces a Dark Web of Secrets in Trailer for the Thriller THE HUNTSMAN
Shawn Ashmore and Elizabeth Mitchell star in grim new indie thriller The Huntsman, and the first trailer has been released, courtesy of Epic Pictures. The film is positioning itself as a psychological crime mystery with serial killer overtones. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t exactly sell confidence.
The Huntsman centers on a withdrawn ICU nurse, played by Shawn Ashmore, who volunteers to read to a man recovering from a coma. That patient, portrayed by Garret Dillahunt, happens to be the prime suspect in the brutal murders of six young women in a small southwestern town.
What starts as a quiet act of compassion quickly spirals into something darker as secrets pile up and motives blur. Dillahunt’s character is accused of being a modern-day serial killer known as “The Huntsman,” a nickname inspired by the Snow White fairy tale.
His wife, played by Elizabeth Mitchell, refuses to believe he’s capable of the crimes and finds herself drowning in the growing contradictions of the investigation.
Meanwhile, a determined detective, played by Jessy Schram, races to piece together the truth before the body count rises even higher. With multiple suspects and shifting perspectives, the story aims for a twisting descent into obsession and deception.
The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Judith Sanders, and is directed by Kyle Kauwika Harris, whose previous work includes The Water Gap, Out of Exile, and Reverence. Harris also co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Jon Whritner. The cast is rounded out by Brent Bailey and Maddison Bullock.
The trailer itself is a tough sell. It’s murky, underlit, and flat, offering little tension or atmosphere to make the mystery feel compelling. Rather than teasing a disturbing psychological ride, it plays like another instantly forgettable direct-to-VOD thriller that blends into the background of the streaming pile.
Epic Pictures will release The Huntsman in select US theaters on February 6th, 2026, followed closely by a VOD release on February 10th.
