Shawn Levy Developing Live-Action DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Series THE FORGOTTEN REALMS For Netflix

Netflix is rolling the dice on one of its biggest fantasy projects yet withThe Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series.

The project is being spearheaded by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Deadpool & Wolverine), writer-showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed), and Hasbro Entertainment.

This is a huge step in bringing the legendary tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) to life on the small screen.

As the title suggests, the upcoming series will be set in The Forgotten Realms, the most iconic campaign setting in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. For decades, this world has been home to some of the franchise’s most beloved characters and thrilling adventures.

There’s a strong creative team attached to this project and I’m excited see how this turns out. I enjoyed the live-action movie that was made, but I’m curious to see how this new version of the fantasy franchise will turn out.

Drew Crevello has written the pilot episode and will serve as showrunner, while Levy and Dan Levine will executive produce through Levy’s production company, 21 Laps. With Levy’s involvement, particularly given his work on Stranger Things, which has prominently featured Dungeons & Dragons elements, this project has the potential to capture the same sense of nostalgia and adventure.

The road to developing a Dungeons & Dragons live-action series started back in 2021, then-Hasbro subsidiary eOne announced plans to develop a D&D television series as a top priority.

The project originally found a home at Paramount+ in early 2023, with Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber initially at the creative helm and Crevello later joining as showrunner. However, after a strategy shift at Paramount+ and eOne’s acquisition by Lionsgate, the series was ditched.

Now, Hasbro Entertainment has taken the reins, allowing for a complete redevelopment of the series under Crevello’s leadership. The new version of The Forgotten Realms is not connected to previous iterations or the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Dungeons & Dragons has been a staple of geek culture for nearly five decades, influencing everything from novels and video games to streaming content and blockbuster films. The game’s mix of high fantasy, deep lore, and player-driven storytelling has captivated over 50 million fans worldwide. With its rich history and iconic elements… elves, orcs, treasure-filled dungeons, and, it offers an big sandbox for Netflix to explore.

If successful, this could be huge for the fantasy franchise, bringing the legendary game’s world to life in a way that fans have been excited about seeing one day.

What do you think? Will The Forgotten Realms finally be the live-action Dungeons & Dragons series fans have been waiting for?
