SHAZAM! Confirmed to Be DC's Next Movie and David F. Sandberg is Set to Direct
THR has confirmed that the next film DC Entertainment plans on going in production on is Shazam!, which tells the story of a boy who transforms into Earth's mightiest mortal. The studio even hired David F. Sandberg to direct. Who's he? You ask? He's the director of the horror movie Lights Out and the upcoming film Annabelle: Creation, which has been getting great reviews.
The film is set up at New Line Cinema and they are looking to start shooting it in January or February of 2018. According to the report:
It is unclear whether Dwayne Johnson, who has long been attached to play Shazam! villain Black Adam, will be involved with Shazam! But he is attached as star and producer of the Black Adam spinoff being developed concurrently to Shazam!
It's hard not to think that Black Adam will be in the movie. He's got to be in it! I just assumed that this would be the movie that set up Johnson's Black Adam spinoff, but we'll just have to wait and see.
I'm actually pretty excited about seeing how Shazam! is handled and I think Sandberg is a decent enough director to give us a solid Shazam! movie. It's pretty incredible that the guy has come this far so fast. He basically got his start shooting horror movie shorts on his iPhone and posting them on YouTube. That's how he was discovered. He was actually in talks to direct the film earlier this year.
As for who will be playing Shazam, that has yet to be seen. But Johnson previously said he would like to see Armie Hammer do it.
I thought The Flash would be the next movie to go into development, but the delay in locking in a director kept pushing it back. All of the other projects like Batgirl, Wonder Woman 2, Suicide Squad 2, and Gotham City Sirens are all in early development.
Are you excited about Shazam! being DC's next film project and what do you think about Sandberg directing it?
