SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW Director Addresses Criticism of the CGI

When the first trailer for Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series was released, the CGI was met with a lot of criticism from the fans. Some people just didn’t buy into it. It’s actually not that bad, though! The guys at Corridor Crew recently shared a video pointing out all of the reasons why the CGI is good.

Now the director of the series, Kat Coiro, responds to the criticism and talks about the CGI work that was done for the series with SFX magazine saying:

"It really is taking the design and asking, ‘Are we getting those facial expressions and those nuances of reaction? That is where all the time comes into play, just really honing in."

In regards to the fan reaction to the first trailer revealing the CGI, that’s some they expected. He explained:

"I think a lot of the reactions have to do with the fact that she is so different than anything we’ve seen. When you think of Thanos or Hulk, they have a grisliness and a harshness and a bulkiness to them that is just so different. And when you just see a little pop of her, it’s almost shocking because we haven’t seen it before."

Coiro goes on to talk about working with Victoria Alonso, the President of Physical, Post Production, VFX, and Animation at Marvel Studios, and what she brings to the She-Hulk design ,saying:

“She has such an incredible eye, and to me a lot of that eye comes from this very emotional gut reaction that she has, which is backed by decades of technical expertise.

"What I think is so cool is she keeps this real emotional reaction to the VFX. Watching her work has taught me so much about why something works and why it doesn’t; why does it go into uncanny valley? And it always comes back to the actor’s performance and capturing that."

There’s a lot of work that goes into creating CGI characters like this, and I think they are doing good things with this series. We’ll have to wait and see what the finished product looks like.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law follows Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) “as she navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk.” The nine-episode series is described as an Ally McBeal-style legal comedy.

The show also stars Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/the Abomination, and Benedict Wong as Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass, and Renée Elise Goldsberry.

Rick and Morty's Jessica Gao created the show and Kat Coiro split directing duties on the series with Anu Valia. Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Brad Winderbaum.

She-Hulk is set to premiere on Disney+ on August 17th.
