SHE-HULK Writer Says They Couldn't Be Too Mean About Marvel When Writing Jokes for the Series
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has been an ok show so far. It’s not the best thing that Marvel has done, but I’m enjoying certain aspects of it. I’m a big fan of the She-Hulk comics, and so far this series is falling short of what I was hoping it would be.
One of the things that I enjoy about the character Jennifer Walters is her self-aware sense of humor and that she jokes around about the fact that she’s a character in a comic book. As you’ve seen, they’ve incorporated this into the series as the character breaks the fourth wall to talk to the audience.
When it comes to the jokes that she tells in the series, it turns out there is a limit to what kind of jokes they can tell. In a recent interview with IGN, She-Hulk head writer Jessica Gao revealed that Marvel draws the line at jokes that are too mean about Marvel itself. When asked about jokes, she said:
"Yeah, I mean, most of the time, the only jokes that they really forced us to pull back on were when we were being a little too mean when we were poking fun at Marvel things.”
My one question about that is how will that affect the kind of jokes we see in Deadpool 3? Y’all know how Deadpool can get with his jokes! While the writers of Deadpool say there has been no interference with the writing process and Marvel has been supportive of their vision, once the script is turned in will Marvel ask them to pull back on some of those jokes as well? That’s my only concern about this. Gao went on to talk about the tone of She-Hulk, saying that fans should be reassured:
"Well, I think what this shows and should be reassuring to fans is that Marvel now has gotten to a point where they're willing to expand into areas that they've never gone to before. And they're open to doing that, and trying new things, and getting into areas that were outside of their comfort zone previously."
Deadpool 3 is definitely going to test Marvel's limits when it comes to areas outside of their comfort zone! What do you think about Marvel forcing She-Hulk writers to pull back on some jokes about Marvel?
