SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 Actor Loses Faith in Robert Downey Jr.’s Long-Delayed Sequel

Fans of Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes films have been holding onto hope for more than a decade that a third movie would finally make it to the big screen. Unfortunately, one of the franchise’s stars isn’t so sure it’s ever going to happen.

Eddie Marsan, who plays Inspector Lestrade in the series, recently shared a discouraging update while promoting his new film All the Devils Are Here. In an interview with ScreenRant, Marsan admitted that after years of hearing rumors and promises about Sherlock Holmes 3, he doubts the project will ever materialize.

“Every year, I hear that they’re going to do it, they’re going to do it, they’re going to do it, and it never happens,” Marsan said. “I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen.”

This isn’t the first time the long-awaited sequel has come close to getting off the ground. Susan Downey, who produced both Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), revealed in a past interview that the team was once on the verge of moving forward with the third film.

“It just didn’t work out timing-wise, because we couldn’t get it in before Jude [Law] was going to be unavailable,” she explained, adding that production was moving forward until the COVID-19 pandemic brought everything to a halt.

Susan also teased that the movie had a new setting in mind. According to her, Sherlock Holmes 3 has “always been kind of set in America.”

The first two films, directed by Guy Ritchie, were huge successes, blending action, mystery, and Downey Jr.’s charismatic take on the world’s greatest detective. But more than 13 years after A Game of Shadows, the silence surrounding the sequel has left fans frustrated.

Now, with Downey Jr. officially locked back into the Marvel machine for Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, his schedule looks packed, and the future of Sherlock Holmes 3 seems more uncertain than ever.

For now, fans can only keep their fingers crossed that Holmes and Watson will return to the big screen one last time. But if Marsan’s doubts are any indication, the case of Sherlock Holmes 3 may be one mystery that never gets solved.
