Shocking LANTERS Death Rumor Could Completely Change the DCU's Green Lantern Corps
The DCU is still months away from bringing Lanterns to HBO this August, but that hasn't stopped fans from dissecting every rumor they can get their hands on.
The series has already generated plenty of excitement thanks to its trailers, but now a new report has sparked an entirely different conversation. If there's any truth to it, the future of the Green Lantern Corps in James Gunn's DC Universe could look very different than anyone expected.
We already knowLanterns unfolds across two different timelines, one set in 2016 and another in 2026. While that's an intriguing storytelling approach on its own, the biggest shock supposedly comes at the end of the premiere.
According to a rumor making the rounds on Reddit, Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, dies at the end of the first episode, meaning the 2026 storyline follows a world where one of DC's greatest heroes is already gone.
It's a huge claim, and it's important to remember that it's still just a rumor. Nothing has been confirmed by DC Studios or HBO. Even so, it's easy to see why fans are reacting so strongly.
Killing off one of the show's central characters right out of the gate would be a surprising move, especially for a series that's expected to help establish the Green Lantern Corps within the new DCU.
The dual timeline could soften that blow, though. Even if Hal dies early in the present-day story, the 2016 timeline would still allow Chandler to remain a major part of the series, filling in the events that led to whatever tragedy unfolds.
Another interesting piece of the rumor is that the Lanterns are supposedly investigating the mysterious Manhunters. That lines up with previous speculation that the earlier timeline leans into the grounded detective mystery that the show has been compared to, while the 2026 storyline embraces the larger cosmic side of Green Lantern mythology. That combination could give fans the best of both worlds, mixing crime investigation with massive sci-fi storytelling.
If Hal really is taken off the board early, it also opens the door to one of the biggest Green Lantern storylines ever told.
Fans started connecting the rumor to Parallax. Instead of adapting the comics beat for beat, the DCU could use Hal's apparent death as the catalyst for his eventual transformation. Rather than following the original storyline with its enormous body count, the series could chart a different path.
Maybe Hal is revived by the Parallax entity and returns as one of the DCU's most dangerous villains. Maybe he never actually dies and is instead corrupted by whatever events unfold throughout the season.
Either possibility would create a compelling conflict, setting up an eventual showdown between Hal, John Stewart, and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.
Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean Hal would stay a villain forever. The comics eventually brought him back into the light through Green Lantern: Rebirth, and later stories focused heavily on his redemption.
The DCU could follow a similar path, especially since this version of Hal is already an experienced veteran. On the other hand, the filmmakers could eventually give him the same heroic farewell he received when he sacrificed himself to stop the Sun-Eater.
Or none of this could happen at all. That's the fun and frustration of rumors. Until Lanterns finally premieres, everything remains speculation. Still, considering Hal Jordan's complicated history in the comics, the idea doesn't feel completely impossible.
Whether this report ends up being accurate or not, it's certainly given Green Lantern fans plenty to debate while they count down the days until the series arrives.
Lanterns premieres on HBO this August, and if even part of this rumor turns out to be true, the Green Lantern Corps may never be the same.
