When George Lucas sent out on a journey to cast a young actor in the role of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, there were over 3,000 young boys who auditioned for the role! They narrowed that number down to three boys, and those three boy consisted of Jake Lloyd, Michael Angarano, and Devon Michael.

Jake Lloyd ended up landing the coveted role, but Devon Michael almost got it, and now there’s a short documentary for you to watch from The New York Times that tells Michael’s story. It’s titled “In a Galaxy Far Far Away, I Was Almost Anakin.”

The video offers some behind the scenes footage from the audition process, and 32-year-old Devon Michael talks about the process that he went through and how being rejected affected his life. This is seriously a must-watch for any Star Wars fan!

I also included a previously released featurette that came with home video release of The Phantom Menace detailing the audition process.
