SHREK 5 and Edgar Wright's SHADOWS Reportedly Set For Release in 2019
In a THR profile about DreamWorks Animation's future after being purchased by NBC Universal for $3.8 billion*, the outlet revealed that the studio will be greenlighting two DWA films per year. The 2019 release slate has been decided, and it's a good news/bad news situation. As threatened, Shrek 5 will come out in that year, but the good news is that Edgar Wright will be making his feature animation debut with Shadows in 2019 as well.
We can all pretty much imagine what Shrek 5 is going to be like without hearing any details about it, but Shadows is more of an intriguing mystery. Wright co-wrote the screenplay with David Walliams, and all we know is that it's a "captivating and energetic tale" that deals with the concept of shadows. Here's what Wright had to say when the project was first announced:
“My first endeavors in film-making as a teenager were in animation, so it was hugely intriguing to get a call from DreamWorks Animation about potentially directing,” added Wright in a statement. “When the Shadows concept was suggested to me, I could see the poster, the title sequence and pretty much the whole movie. It's a blast writing this and to have one of my oldest friends in comedy, David Walliams, along for the adventure is a thrill.”
Because the premise is so vague, it's hard to guess how this could turn out, but the idea of Wright bringing his kinetic style to animation is definitely exciting. Fingers crossed this turns out to be the start of a whole new promising branch of his career.
*Apparently the deal hasn't officially closed yet, but it seems like it's only a matter of time.
