SHREK 5 Trailer Sends Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Their Grown-Up Kids to Jail in a Wild New Adventure

DreamWorks has released the first teaser trailer for Shrek 5, and it delivers exactly the kind of chaotic fairy tale insanity fans have been waiting for.

The beloved franchise returns after a long hiatus, bringing back familiar faces, introducing the next generation of characters, and tossing everyone into another ridiculous adventure through Far, Far Away.

The film reunites Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as the voices of Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Joining the cast are Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez, and Skylar Gisondo, who voice Shrek and Fiona’s now-grown children, Felicia, Fergus, and Farkle.

The trailer cleverly opens with a storybook recap of the events from the original Shrek, reminding audiences how this unlikely trio first came together back in 2001.

Before the narration can get too sentimental, Donkey jumps in and declares that it's time for a makeover. The moment appears to poke fun at the franchise’s updated animation style, which gives the familiar fairy tale world a fresh visual upgrade while still retaining its classic charm.

From there, the trailer launches into a series of bizarre encounters across Far, Far Away. Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the kids cross paths with a towering giant, various law enforcement officers, and a particularly unsettling snowman who seems to be a parody of Olaf from Disney’s Frozen.

Standing in a dark alley, the creepy character asks, “you wanna date a snowman?” in what is easily one of the trailer’s strangest yet funny moments.

Fans will also be happy to see the return of Gingy, who may have the trailer’s most ridiculous gag. The gingerbread fan favorite proudly shows off two gumdrop buttons attached to his backside and announces that he’s “caked up like a friggin’ bakery.”

The preview builds toward an ending that perfectly captures the franchise’s sense of humor. Shrek, Fiona, their children, and Donkey find themselves crammed inside a jail cell.

While everyone else looks less than thrilled about the situation, Donkey decides it's the perfect opportunity to perform. He belts out snippets of “Baby Come Back” and “Roxanne,” much to Shrek’s growing annoyance.

Shrek 5 marks the franchise’s first mainline installment since Shrek Forever After arrived in 2010. In the years since, the series expanded through the successful Puss in Boots spinoffs, including 2011’s Puss in Boots and the critically acclaimed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022.

After 17 years away from the main saga, it looks like DreamWorks is bringing Shrek and the gang back with the same offbeat humor, fairy tale parodies, and musical mayhem that made the franchise a phenomenon in the first place. If this first trailer is any indication, Far, Far Away is about to get a whole lot weirder.

The next chapter of the iconic animated series will be released on June 30, 2027.
