SHRINKING Season 3 Trailer Gives First Look at Michael J. Fox’s Character and Teases Jimmy’s Spark With Cobie Smulders’ Sofi

Apple has released the first trailer for Shrinking Season 3, and it sets an emotional tone while also sprinkling in some genuinely funny, heartfelt moments. The new season of the hit Apple TV series continues to dig into grief, healing, and connection, while pushing its characters into the next phase of their lives.

Created by Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein alongside Jason Segel, the trailer centers on Jimmy as he tries to put on a brave face while dealing with the reality that his daughter Alice, portrayed by Lukita Maxwell, is heading off to college in Connecticut to play soccer.

He’s clearly proud, but the sadness sneaks through, especially during a quiet bench conversation with Goldstein’s Louis Winston. That bench has become a familiar space for reflection on this show, and it’s used again here to land a line that sums up Jimmy’s mindset:

“All I want is for her to live peacefully, and then she can go off and make whatever mistakes a young woman in her 70s might make,” Jimmy tells Louis, who remarks that “that sounds healthy.”

Paul offers a bit of insight that fits perfectly with where everyone is heading. “Life is gonna keep demonstrating what you need most.” Lawrence previously said that the core idea of Season 3 is about moving forward.

There’s also a quick tease of Sofi, played by Cobie Smulders, who appears to spark something new for Jimmy. He fumbles the moment and fails to ask her out, which doesn’t go unnoticed.

Liz, played by Christa Miller, watches from her balcony while Sean, portrayed by Luke Tennie, messes around on the pool house roof and Derek, played by Ted McGinley, tries to retrieve a football stuck in a tree. It’s a classic Shrinking ensemble moment that delivers that warm awkward comedy I love about the show.

One of the biggest highlights comes with the first look at Michael J. Fox joining the series. He shows up in what appears to be a doctor’s office Paul is visiting and cracks a joke after Paul mentions Parkinson’s. Fox responds that he’s there for “a haircut.”

Season 3 also sees the return of Brian Urie as Jimmy’s best friend Brian, along with familiar faces including Goldstein, Damon Wayans Jr., Devin Kawaoka, Wendie Malick, and Smulders. New additions this season include Jeff Daniels and Fox.

If this preview is any indication, Jimmy’s next chapter is going to hurt a little, heal a lot, and probably make us laugh through both.

Season 3 will premiere globally with a one hour episode on Wednesday, January 28. New episodes will roll out weekly every Wednesday through April 8, 2026 on Apple TV.
