SICARIO 2 Plot Details Revealed by Writer Taylor Sheridan

Before helming last year's Oscar-nominated Arrival (my favorite film of 2016), director Denis Villenueve directed Sicario, the nail-biting border thriller from writer Taylor Sheridan that starred Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin. Villeneuve won't be back to direct the sequel, called Soldado, since he's tackling Blade Runner 2049, but Del Toro and Brolin will be back in front of the camera and Sheridan has written Soldado's screenplay. In a new interview with Collider, Sheridan spoke a bit about the upcoming follow-up, how it's going to differ from the original, and confirmed the idea of a third movie in the series:

"[When the producers asked him about a sequel] I said, ‘Look you can’t really do a sequel, but I sure would love to see what happened if these guys didn’t have a chaperone.’ Because basically they’re operating within the United States, so I played with some actual laws that exist and found a way that they could operate more or less legally within the U.S. But they had a chaperone. What happens if they weren’t in the U.S. and they didn’t have a chaperone? How bad or good would that work out? You’ve seen Sicario, good isn’t going to factor into it too much.”

As far as what plot will include, Sheridan offered the following detail:

“I would say if Sicario is a film about the militarization of police and that blending over, this is removing the policing aspect from it.”

We've known for a little while that a third film in this nascent franchise could eventually be in the cards. Sheridan won't give details, but when asked about a third movie, he said, “Who knows? I know what it would be if they did. I know exactly what it would be if they did.”

No word yet on a production start date for Soldado, but director Stefano Sollima will step in to replace Villeneuve. He certainly has some big shoes to fill, but with Sheridan previously promising that this script is "ten times" more vicious than the first, I'm hopeful that this film turns out to be just as thrilling as the original.
