Sigourney Weaver Plays a Teenage Na'vi Character in AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER; Here's a New Photo
A lot of fans have been wondering who exactly Sigourney Weaver is playing in James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, and that information has been shared! We assumed that she would be playing a new and different character, and in a surprising reveal, we learn that Weaver is playing a teen Na’vi character named Kiri, and she is the adoptive daughter of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).
When talking about her character in an interview with Empire, she said, “I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents. I certainly do. I was 5’ 10” or 5’ 11” when I was 11. I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time. She’s searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by Jim.”
Cameron added, “As an acting challenge, it’s big. We’re gonna have a 60-something actor playing a character [decades younger than] her actual biological age. Sig thought it was all kinds of fun. Sigourney just became younger. She looked younger, she had more energy, and she never quite stepped out of Kiri for our whole capture period. She had a glow on her face and lightness in her step and a fun spirit.”
This is a pretty cool detail about the movie and I love that Weaver is going to be playing a teen character and it’s fun to hear that she fully embraced it and, as Cameron said, “became younger.”
The sequel is set more than a decade after the events of the first film. It “begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 14th, 2022. Here’s another image of Weaver’s character on the cover of the magazine.
