Sigourney Weaver Talks About Shooting Underwater Scenes For AVATAR and is Currently Filming Parts 4 and 5
It looks like James Cameron’s Avatar sequels are full steam ahead! In a recent interview with THR, Sigourney Weaver says that they have just finished shooting Avatar 2 and 3 and are now busy working on parts 4 and 5.
What’s interesting about that is James Cameron previously said that parts 4 and 5 weren’t guaranteed.
“Let’s face it, if AVATAR 2 and 3 don’t make enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5. They’re fully encapsulated stories in and of themselves. It builds across the five films to a greater kind of meta narrative, but they’re fully formed films in their own right, unlike, say, The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, where you really just had to sort of go, ‘Oh, shit, all right, well I guess I better come back next year.’ Even though that all worked and everybody did.”
I guess things have changed if he’s currently in the process of shooting those films. Weaver went on to talk about shooting the underwater scenes of the film and also offers some new details on the film’s message and about her character:
“We shot it in LA and James has announced publicly that there’s a lot of underwater work, so we learned how to free dive and we did many scenes underwater which was challenging and kind of cool.”
When asked about the Avatar sequels changing the cinematic experience, she said:
“I think that because the water becomes another world. The scripts are amazing, and in the first one, which I love, I think he hadn’t set up a lot of things. In this one he got to tell this very personal story. They’re amazing. There’s a message to not sacrifice everything for greed and conquest. It will take all four movies to really make that message loud and clear for the whole world.”
She also confirmed that she will not be playing the same character she played in the first Avatar movie, Dr. Grace Augustine. She will be playing a completely different character over the course of the four new films.
I’m really curious to see how these movies turn out and see how they end up doing at the box office. After all, the first film hold the record for the highest grossing movie ever made.
Are you excited to see what James Cameron delivers with these sequels?
