Sigourney Weaver Wants Answers About Her Missing GHOSTBUSTERS Kid Just as Much as Fans Do
For decades, Ghostbusters fans have been asking a deceptively simple question. In Sigourney Weaver’s Ghostbusters 2, Dana Barrett had a baby named Oscar.
Three franchise films have followed since 1989, and not a single one has offered an update on the kid. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire all revisited familiar faces, but Oscar has completely vanished from canon. It turns out Weaver has been wondering about him too.
While promoting James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the conversation with io9 drifted to that lingering Ghostbusters mystery. With Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan steering the modern era of the franchise, and Weaver having popped up for a brief scene, was there ever any talk about revisiting Oscar?
“You know, when we made those films in the ’80s, sequels still were not cool. And so we took a big chance making two. And then I thought that what Jason did with this new line, I’m sure he has thought about that. And it wouldn’t surprise me if that happened. That would be fun.”
She followed that up with a wonderfully playful idea that fans will instantly latch onto. “Maybe both the twins who played [the character] could be in it,” she joked. “One was very happy on the set, and the other one didn’t like it.”
Weaver’s Dana popped up in a small credits scene in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, confirming she and Peter Venkman, played by Bill Murray, were still close. It was a fun nod, but it didn’t shed any light on Oscar’s whereabouts.
Then there’s the identity of Oscar’s father, a mystery that fans have debated endlessly, which remains unsolved.
Sony has an animated Ghostbusters feature on the way along with a Netflix animated series, though updates have been pretty quiet lately. Maybe one of those projects finally gives Oscar his moment.
