Simon Kinberg Looks to ANDOR for Inspiration in His New STAR WARS Trilogy
There’s a new Star Wars trilogy in the works and it’s got a heavy hitter behind it. Simon Kinberg, the writer-producer known for X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Martian, is heading into hyperspace with his own vision for a galaxy far, far away. And what’s fueling that creative fire? None other than the critically acclaimed series Andor.
In a recent chat with Nerdtropolis, Kinberg opened up about how deeply Andor impacted him and how it’s shaping the foundation of his upcoming Star Wars trilogy.
“There’s a ton of wildly talented folks that want to do great work,” Kinberg said. “I was super inspired and just sort of awestruck by what Tony Gilroy did with Andor. I thought that was about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.”
That’s high praise for Andor, which became a fan favorite thanks to its grounded, political storytelling and complex characters. If Kinberg is aiming for that same level of depth, then we might be in for something pretty special.
While the trilogy still doesn’t have a title or release window, we do know it’s set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, and Kinberg is set to write and produce the trilogy, which puts him right at the center of the creative process.
He admitted the whole experience still feels surreal. “It’s not even a dream come true—I couldn’t have dreamed it,” he said. “Just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it."
While we wait to learn more about the characters, storylines, and tone of this new trilogy, knowing Kinberg is taking cues from Andor definitely gives us something to look forward to. If he can capture even a fraction of what made that series so powerful, we could be looking at a bold new chapter in Star Wars storytelling.
