Simon Pegg on STAR TREK 3 and Creating a “Kickass” Role for Idris Elba
Yesterday we learned that Star Trek 3 might end up being called Star Trek Beyond. It seems like an appropriate title for the movie, as this next chapter moves the characters out into their five-year-mission to explore new worlds and new civilizations.
During a recent interview with MTV, co-writer Simon Pegg talked a little bit about the film and explained that he’s writing a kickass role for Idris Elba, who will be playing a villain.
“Idris is an extraordinary actor and we’re trying to write him a kickass role. This is the five year mission, we’re out there. We don’t need to keep bumping into the same five people. It’s a massive universe!”
This will be the thirteenth film in the franchise, and Pegg wants to do something special with his co-writer Doug Jung that fans will be happy with. To do this, Pegg explained that they are pulling inspiration from Star Trek: The Original Series.
“It’s an incredible show when you watch it — how little they had. We think of Star Trek as this huge thing, but it started out as these thoughtful plays with small sets… dealing with incredibly human and intellectual ideas.
“We can certainly invest in the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what it is. We’re hoping to make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget where it came from.”
I’ve really enjoyed what J.J. Abrams has done with the first two movies, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Justin Lin delivers in this one. Star Trek 3 starts shooting in June, and it will be released July 8th, 2016.
