Simon Pegg Quit Writing STAR TREK BEYOND Three Times

When Simon Pegg took on the writing duties for Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond with Doug Jung, I imagine he didn’t think the pressure would be so intense. In a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, the writer and actor admitted that he quit writing the script three times, and each time he quit J.J. Abrams was there to talk him back into finishing it.

“I quit like three times, I think. Every time, J. J. Abrams said, 'Oh come on, Simon …’”

Pegg goes on to recall his early starring and writing gig on the U.K. series Spaced, and how his character Tim, took a jab at the Star Trek film franchise that seems to have come to an ironic full circle:

"Funny, I remember there was a line in Spaced about certainty. I said, 'As sure as eggs is eggs, as sure as day follows night, as sure as every odd-numbered Star Trek movie is shit ...' – and I am now writing Star Trek 13. I think I would have been apoplectic with the irony of it all, you know. And I love thinking about that, the circularity of having been a fan of these things as a kid and now being part of them. And I feel very lucky and I feel – in my quietest, most private moments – proud of myself."

I’m happy to hear that with the help of Abrams, Pegg stuck with it. I think the movie will be better because of his involvement. Star Trek Beyond is currently shooting with director Justin Lin at the helm. We have no idea what the story will entail, but it will pick up with the crew of the Enterprise on their five-year mission.

The movie will be released in theaters on July 8th, 2016.
