Simu Liu Seemingly Confirms Shang-Chi Will Return in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS

Simu Liu may have just casually confirmed that Shang-Chi is sticking around for both of Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movies, while also giving fans another small update on the painfully long wait for a sequel to his solo MCU adventure.

We already know Avengers: Doomsday is bringing together a massive collection of Marvel characters, including Liu’s Shang-Chi. The cast of Avengers: Secret Wars has been much harder to pin down, though Letitia Wright’s Shuri and Paul Bettany’s Vision have previously been linked to the film.

Now Liu appears to have added his own name to the Secret Wars roster. During a fan signing captured in a now-deleted Instagram video from Itzyreviews and later shared on Reddit, Liu was asked when we might finally see Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2.

Liu didn’t have a release date to offer, but his response provided a pretty interesting look at what comes first on his Marvel schedule: "First Doomsday, then Secret Wars, then…"

The fan jumped in with the rumored sequel title Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time, prompting Liu to respond: "Let's hope."

Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced Liu for Avengers: Secret Wars, so this isn’t confirmation from the studio. Still, Liu mentioning Secret Wars as part of his upcoming Marvel workload certainly sounds like Shang-Chi will survive whatever insanity awaits him in Doomsday and return for the follow-up.

That would make plenty of sense. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame operated as two halves of one enormous MCU event, and Doomsday and Secret Wars are expected to deliver another massive conflict involving Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., and a whole lot of Marvel heroes.

Shang-Chi getting a role across both movies would be cool to see. Liu hasn’t appeared as the character in a live-action Marvel project since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrived five years ago.

The bigger question remains what happened to Shang-Chi 2. The sequel has been discussed for years, but it still hasn’t made its way onto Marvel Studios’ release calendar. The project obviously remains somewhere in his future, just on the other side of Doomsday and Secret Wars.

For now, Shang-Chi fans may have to settle for watching the Master of the Ten Rings throw down alongside the Avengers before he gets another movie of his own.

Considering how long Marvel has kept the character on the sidelines, seeing him involved in two big Avengers movies at least brings him back into the fight.

Hopefully Shang-Chi 2 isn’t too far behind.
