Skateboarding legend and superstar Tony Hawk will be the subject of a new feature film documentary that’s being produced by the Duplass Brothers.

I’ve been a fan of Tony Hawk ever since I was kid. He is one of the best skaters to ever live and he’s done so much for the sport of Skateboarding over the course of his career. He’s one of the reasons why Skateboarding is an Olympic sport!

It’s been really weird watching him skate recently because he’s winding down his career. He knows that his time skating and pulling off certain tricks is coming to an end. Just this year he performed what he knows would be his last Ollie 540, and after several attempts, he landed it and then broke down in tears knowing it was the last time he would ever do it.

The untitled film will focus “on the life and career of the 53-year-old ‘Birdman,’” and it’s being directed by filmmaker-photographer Sam Jones (I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued). Jones said in a statement, “I’ve been a skater my whole life, so this film is a passion project for me and I am excited to find a good home for it.”

Hawk said in a statement, “We have already shot everything for it, it’s just in the editing process. I definitely wanted to give them as much footage and interview as possible.”

Mark Duplass added, “We’ve been quietly working on this one for a few years. We are floored with the unmitigated access Tony has allowed us to his life and his fascinating relationship to the sport.”

I’m excited about this doc, and it’s expected to be released at some point in 2022.
